The Hubba X installation and setup is quick and easy, below are the most frequently asked questions and top tips for marine installations to help you get the most from the Hubba X routers.
Strictly speaking the higher the better, as the further up the mast you can mount the antenna the better reception it is likely to get. However, we would suggest that you mount the antenna as high as practically possible, given ease of mounting, and cable length. On yachts we suggest looking no further than the first spreader, many simply attach the antenna to the pushpit rail. For motor boats, the radar arch is an obvious location and larger vessels generally use the “monkey island” platform above the bridge.
Canal boats require the antenna mounted on a low profile mount which requires drilling holes in the roof of the boat to enable running of cables through the headlining to the router location.
All of the Hubba X range work on both AC & DC power, and are supplied with AC and DC power options, the X4 Go works on 12v DC, whilst the Duo can cope with 10-30v DC supplies.
The Huawei indoor routers for inland waterways are only supplied with mains power options, although we are able to offer 12v conversions at a small extra cost.
This is a little complicated so bear with us!
The answer comes down to frequency ranges. Some countries have a whole spectrum of frequencies that the differing mobile carriers use, others have a much smaller range.
Typically the Hubba X 4Go operates in the EU and rest of the world (except for USA, Canada and Americas).
The Hubba X 4Duo has global coverage as operates on a wider frequency range. You should select an appropriate SIM card for the country you are visiting/operating in.
Typically you will get connection up to 10 miles offshore. This can extend as far as 20 miles subject to the specific location of the onshore transmitter. If the mobile mast is some miles inland, then you will get less range.
Hubba X4 units comprise two components, the external MIMO antenna and the indoor or control unit that contains the SIM card(s), connected by two coaxial cables.
The installation job is therefore very similar to a VHF ship to shore radio, with the antenna fitted as high as is practical. Then run cables to the control unit and connect this to a power supply.
Our standard kits include 8m lengths of coax to ensure the right balance between cable length and signal loss.
Also available are 15m and 20m cable upgrades using low loss coax cable.
This low loss cable is considerably thicker and less malleable than standard. To combat this we include short pigtails of thinner cable to aid installation.
